The United States of Stingy

After the United States took fire from anti-American socialists for not giving enough money to help the tsunami victims, the U.S. upped its gift to $350 million.

“God Bless America!” says David.

And I think that it is a tremendous abuse of taxpayer funds. This isn’t a charity organization distributing money donated by generous persons, this is a government taking money from their citizens at gunpoint, and then giving it away for a cause that does nothing to benefit the taxpayers.

Don’t get me all wrong, I think that it is morally right to help people who are victims of natural disasters. I spent a whole day in South Florida helping people who were hit by one of the hurricanes. I just happen to have a problem with the government taking money from people and deciding in what way the American taxpayer is going to be generous. If the government is going to use that money to protect the American people, or to provide a public service, such as building roads, fine. But “being nice” is simply not a function of the government.

The whole idea that the size of the American government’s gift somehow reflects on the generosity of Americans is flat-out wrong. The size of the gift merely reflects the desire of the people in charge of taxpayer funds to not look “uncool” to the schmucks at the U.N.

If the $350 million had never been taken from American’s wallets in the first place, people would be better able to personally donate. As it is, over $125 million has been donated by Americans.

So with a very small edit, I can wholeheartedly agree with David’s sentiment:

God bless Americans!

As you may or may not already be aware, members of the Watcher’s Council hold a vote every week on what they consider to be the most link-worthy pieces of writing around… per the Watcher’s instructions, I am submitting one of my own posts for consideration in the upcoming nominations process.

Here here! During the Cold War, it could be argued that aid to foreign countries was a sort of gesture to keep those country’s governments from falling to Communism, and thus, worth it in the long run. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, I’ve wondered why we give aid to other countries for any reason, tsunami or anything.

I’m with you: I’m all for the American people voluntarily supporting humanitarian aid organizations such as the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders, but don’t force every single taxpayer to chip in by raiding the treasury!
