Oliver Making Sense
A visit to Oliver’s site is usually a masochistic endeavor for me, but his remarks on the Democrats’ inertia regarding the impending Social Security crisis are quite refreshing.
The Democrats are going to lose the social security debate.
- We’ve been talking about “saving” social security (Clinton ’96, Gore ’00, Kerry ’04), which was true, but now saying “there is no crisis” sounds like a direct contradiction to our previous position
- The GOP is posing their position as “reform”. No matter how insidious their plans really are (“Put Grandma’s livelihood in Enron!”), the Dem response of “Keep things as they are!” is a loser.
- Nobody can offer me an answer for this yet: why aren’t congressional Dems proposing alternative legislation?
Oliver Willis: Social Security Contrarian
Kerry basically stuck his head in the sand on this issue. There may be disagreements about the best way to fix it (and really, I’m open to suggestions), but denying the problem just makes you look foolish.
This is a problem that will affect all Americans, and it is an issue that can be embraced by all political parties. Put on your thinking caps, Washington!
