The Boys who cried “Fake Memo!”

The Memogate scandal in which forged documents harmful to President Bush were presented as genuine on CBS’s 60 Minutes program might have given a little bit too much confidence to some on the right.

A memo circulated a few weeks ago contained alleged Republican talking points for the Terri Schiavo situation, including one bullet point that read “This is a great political issue.” Powerline, famed for breaking the Memogate scandal wide open, jumped all over this, claiming the document to be a fake.

Now, a staffer of Florida Senator Mel Martinez has claimed responsibility for the memo, and resigned. Oliver Willis will have a “Righty Retraction Countdown” post up any minute now.

What I want to know is this: why did anyone need a memo to show them that Republicans were milking this issue for all it was worth? “Fake, but accurate” has morphed into “true, and accurate” without surprising me in the least.
