Representative Democracy: Undemocratic?
A reader tipped me to this article heralding the good news in Connecticut where, by a margin of 27-9, the Connecticut State Senate voted to recognize civil unions between same-sex couples. Six Republicans joined 21 Democrats in voting for the bill. Republican Governor M. Jodi Rell favors the concept of civil unions, but has not taken a stand on this particular legislation.
Yet, not everyone is happy. “Brian Brown, executive director of the Family Institute of Connecticut, had maintained that most voters do not support civil unions or same-sex marriage, and he called the vote ‘a slap in the face of democracy.’”
GayPatriot: Democracy at work — CT Senate passes civil unions bill
Heh. No matter what side of the issue you’re on, you have to admit that someone calling representative democracy in action “a slap in the face of democracy” is pretty damn funny. As it turns out, it just means that it’s not the result that the FIC wanted. Heck, even “mob rule” wouldn’t have worked in this case… 56 percent of Connecticut voters are in favor of civil unions. Any bets on how long it will take for the FIC to demand judicial intervention to stop this horrible “democracy” concept?
