Silicone Implant Insanity

I’m going to keep the breast-themed posts rolling with this gem about the emotional train wrecks who are blaming silicone breast implants for all the troubles in their lives.

Women who blame silicone-gel breast implants for crippling health problems faced women who called them the best option in an emotional debate Monday as government scientists consider whether it’s time to lift a decade-plus ban on most of the devices.

“They poisoned my mother,” said a tearful Brenna Dowd of Boise, Idaho. “I have never known a healthy mother.”

“I don’t want anybody else to suffer this way,” said Susan Helman of Florida, who described autoimmune diseases that she attributes to platinum left in her body when her implants broke apart.

AP: Women Speak at FDA Breast-Implant Hearing

Why are these people even being allowed to testify? This isn’t evidence, this is emotion. Silicone breast implants, which are vastly superior in quality to their saline-filled sisters, have never been shown to cause these symptoms. What if, before these symptoms started showing up, the women in question started drinking orange juice? Would we be having hearings on the safety of orange juice with Susie Lee Johnson giving some sob story about how she feels that her mother’s health problems are a result of pulp consumption?

The information is out there. People are free to look at the studies and come to their own conclusions. Why are we preventing people from making choices about their own lives based on a bunch of blame shifters with smeared mascara?
