But What About Abortion?
Watch as people on both sides of the isle try to discern just what John Roberts’ views on abortion are. They have two peices of evidence.
Exhibit A
Roberts argued that Roe vs. Wade should be overturned… but he did this not personally, but arguing on behalf of an anti-abortion client while working as Soliciter General for George H. W. Bush, so this is not his personal opinion.
Exhibit B
Roberts declared in his 2003 appellate court nomination hearings that “Roe vs. Wade is the settled law of the land.” He continued, “there’s nothing in my personal views that would prevent me from fully and faithfully applying that precedent.” But of course, this was coming from someone being nominated to the appellate court, which cannot overrule the Supreme Court Now that he’s going to be on the Supreme Court, he doesn’t have to defer to any other court, so this doesn’t mean anything either.
Hm… so it seems that we don’t know what his personal opinions on abortion are. Which is good, because it doesn’t matter. He’s not going to rule based on personal convictions.
