I don’t see how this man’s legacy should be celebrated. He was someone who was against personal freedoms, and continued to trample on the rights of womene, and minorities. Yes, he held a great and respectable position, but that doesn’t not mean he should be remembered as a hero.
Not to dimish his death, or cause disrespect. That’s just how I feel.
I’ve not celebrated him. Although in his later years, I found myself agreeing with his rulings (like his dissenting vote in that University of Michigan racial preferences in admissions case), some of his earlier positions were definitely offensive to me. Still, I respect the office, and by extension, he who serves in it.
