[...] Bonus for other OS X users: I stumbled across a meme creation attempt by Om Malik (by way of Ceprix) that asks users to name their top 10 Mac apps. There are some very interesting and useful tools mentioned, not only by Malik, but also by his users, but the one that I've gotten the most use out of has been Quicksilver. It's a bit difficult to describe (Mark Jaquith does an admirable job trying to describe it here), but I'll give it a shot: it's like having a Tab-completion pseudo-command line interface for your Mac. It makes getting around my Mac thousands of times easier. Prior to using Quicksilver, in order to have easy access to commonly-used applications, I had three choices: I could drag a shortcut to my Dock and use up precious screen real estate, I could place a shortcut on my Desktop, or I could open a Finder window, drill down to the Applications folder and start the app from there. Now, I simply hit Ctl+Space and type the first few letters of the application in question. Quicksilver then finds the app and, with a tap of the Enter key, I can fire up whatever suits my whims. It also works for visited URLs, documents, filesystem locations, iTunes - all manner of applications, MIME types, and actions. Brilliant! // Used for showing and hiding user information in the comment form function ShowUtils() { document.getElementById("authorinfo").style.display = ""; document.getElementById("showinfo").style.display = "none"; document.getElementById("hideinfo").style.display = ""; } function HideUtils() { document.getElementById("authorinfo").style.display = "none"; document.getElementById("showinfo").style.display = ""; document.getElementById("hideinfo").style.display = "none"; } [...]

It's all about BBEdit. It's so good, I gave up a decade of vi for it. (I switched to the Mac in 1996.) I can't use a Mac without BBEdit.

Back in the late 80s I was teaching "DOS is Your Friend" classes to the secretaries where I worked when Hubby brought home a Mac Plus. I thought he was nuts! Then I saw how intuitive it was and I was hooked.

While we are all recommending apps let me thrown in:

CyberDuck - much like Transmit but free and integrates well with TextMate.

Adium - All you really ever need from an IM client.

iTerm - A tabbed replacement for Terminal.

CocoaMySQL - One of the nicest GUI's I've ever seen for a database

For a great text editor try Tex-Edit Plus (shareware).

For more P2P files try Limewire (free).

For an app launcher, you might also try MaxMenus ($19.95) or DragThing ($29). With MaxMenus, simply hit the Escape key and menu pops up under your mouse where ever you are. Very handy if you are using a dual monitor setup.

Other cool programs include:

- SBook (free): free format contact manager. Type "Smith" in the search box, and as you type, it keeps narrowing down the entries to show you only the entries containing the string you have typed. I use it as my phone book. Hasn't gotten much attention, but it works beautifully.

- Audio Hijack Pro ($32): record audio from any application or any source. I have my stereo connected to my Mac via via a Griffin iMic, and use the time recording to record Howard Stern from the radio everyday. Also connected my phone to my Mac via a Griffin PowerWave, and have AudioHijack automatically detect phone calls and record them when I pick up the phone. Most reviews I have seen on simple recording apps have failed to mention Audio Hijack Pro, which is the best that I have tried.

- Amadeus II ($30): easy-to-use sound editor. Great program even though it is shareware. I use it to copy short audio clips from a file that I want to email to friends. For example, if I want to remove a 2 minute bit from Stern so I can email it, just open it in Amadeus, copy the segment you want, paste it into a new file, save it in any format or quality you want, and you are done.

- Convertx PVR PX-TV402U with EyeTV software ($186): works great as TiVo-like device for the Mac. Great software. Cheaper than El Gato's EyeTV 200 ($295) which works exactly the same.

- Circus Ponies NoteBook ($49): throw all your junk, your notes, your photos, your PDFs, and whatever, and find it quickly.

- OmniGraffle (free): draw flowcharts and diagrams

- OmniOutliner (free): make outlines; drag and drop items to new locations
