Reid: Diversity Worth More than Merit

Harry Reid is coming right out with some offensive remarks about the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. (Judge Alito is of Italian descent).

Second, this appointment ignores the value of diverse backgrounds and perspectives on the Supreme Court. The President has chosen a man to replace Sandra Day O’Connor, one of only two women on the Court. For the third time, he has declined to make history by nominating the first Hispanic to the Court. And he has chosen yet another federal appellate judge to join a court that already has eight justices with that narrow background. President Bush would leave the Supreme Court looking less like America and more like an old boys club.

So basically, Bush should have done what he did with Harriet Miers, and picked someone partially because of gender or race.

Of course, we all know that had the President nominated Janice Rogers Brown (may she live forever), a black woman, it wouldn’t have made an ounce of difference. Reid still would have found a reason to dislike her. That Reid is attacking Alito because of his gender and his race is good news for Alito. It means that Reid is unable or unwilling to formulate a proper objection. The only other objection Reid had was that the White House didn’t coddle him and/or let him pick the nominee.

Reid closes with a “pot calling the washing machine black” moment.

I look forward to meeting Judge Alito and learning why those who want to pack the Court with judicial activists are so much more enthusiastic about him than they were about Harriet Miers.”

Funny… you didn’t sound enthusiastic about Judge Alito, Mr. Reid.
