I, too, have always been bothered by beginning a salutation to those I don&#039;t hold dear with the word &quot;Dear&quot;.

Another vestigal holdout from early letter writing is the concluding &quot;Sincerely&quot; or something to the effect of &quot;...Yours&quot;. It&#039;s assumed you&#039;re being sincere, and you generally don&#039;t belong to most people whom you write, much less e-mail.
