Tapes Released in Which Saddam’s Son-in-Law Discusses Hiding of WMDs
ABC News has acquired 12 hours of taped recordings dated to August 1995 in which Saddam warns that terrorist attacks on the United States are coming and his son-in-law Hussein Kamel talks about how they hid WMDs from UN inspectors.
Charles Duelfer, who led the official U.S. search for weapons of mass destruction, told ABC News the tapes show extensive deception but don’t prove that weapons were still hidden in Iraq at the time of the U.S.-led war in 2003.
Does anyone think that the majority of Iraq’s WMDs were still in Iraq when the US invaded? I think it’s pretty much split into the “they didn’t have any” and the “they moved them to Syria” camps.
“What they do is support the conclusion in the report which we made in the last couple of years, that the regime had the intention of building and rebuilding weapons of mass destruction, when circumstances permitted,” he said.
Well yes. The 500 tons of uranium (1.8 tons of it in the enriched “yellowcake” form) that the United States found in Saddam’s Tuwaitha facility in 2003 tend to support that too. Or the nuclear physicist who was ordered by Saddam to keep close-at-hand all blueprints and equipment needed to restart the enrichment program at a moment’s notice.
