Toys and Marriage Tests
I got some new toys. First up is a Beretta 92FS INOX 9mm pistol. My first firearm, intended for home defense. It’s a little bulky for carry, so I’ll likely be getting something smaller for portable protection. Maybe a Kahr PM9, which would be able to share ammo. I’m quite happy with the Beretta, though. Very well made, feels sturdy, is quite safe, holds 15+1 rounds, and has a good damage to kick ratio. It is a bit too big for Sarah, but she was still able to shoot it. I’ve put about 900 rounds through it so it should be worn in. I hope I never have to use it, and if I do, I hope I don’t have to fire it, but it makes me feel safer knowing that it is there if I need it.
Toy number two is a Gameboy DS Lite. This was mostly purchased because of the look on Sarah’s face when she first saw how you could become GIANT Mario and smash the levels up in the new Super Mario Brothers game. The system is quite slick and Mario is addictive and thrilling to play. Sarah also bought Nintendogs and has trained “Consuella” to do a few tricks. I get a kick from watching her using the voice commands, and the ridiculousness of her petting a virtual pet with a tiny white stylus has given me a few silent chuckles.
Toy three is being used to write this… a Palm Treo 700p. Phone, PDA, camera (still and video, but the quality is crap), with full internet access (60kbps normally, but up to 2000kbps in the Tampa area, where I’ll be moving eventually), bluetooth so my Powerbook can use the internet connection wirelessly, web browser, email (can even download and view most attachments), SSH (for admining my server and clients’ servers), speakerphone and MP3 player. Very powerful. It eliminated two devices I previously used: a Hiptop Sidekick II and an LG VX7000. The phone isn’t quite as good or intuitive as my LG VX7000, but it is capable enough. I don’t spend that much time talking anyway. The keyboard is smaller than on a Sidekick and requires more precise thumb clicks (with the tips, and not the fleshy parts) but my speed is improving, and I appreciate the smaller size of the device. The screen is great.
I’ll get pictures of this stuff up just as soon as I find my camera… don’t know where that is hiding at the moment.
Sarah and I had to take a marriage compatibility test a few weeks back. While taking mine, I saw a question (all questions were Agree/Disagree/Unsure answers) that said “some of my future wife’s mannerisms annoy me.” I (honestly) answered “disagree” but thought to myself that surely Sarah would put down “agree.” Well, she didn’t, but immediately wished she had when she found out that I agreed with the statements “sometimes I don’t know what to do when my future wife is in a bad mood” and “my future wife is too dependent on her family.” So now, in her words, she looks like a “moody momma’s boy” while I look like someone who doesn’t do annoying things like chew with my mouth open, bite my fingernails, and twiddle my toes (all of which I do). She almost made me turn the car around so she could change her answer. But hey, it’s not my fault that she temporarily forgot how annoying some of my habits are, right? You’d think so, but you’d be wrong. Of course, compared to other questions regarding domestic violence and substance abuse, I think a few annoying habits and a tendency to call home are small issues. And every girls is moody sometimes and no guy on earth knows how to handle that all the time. We’re going to be just fine.
We’re looking at wedding bands now. She’s probably going with a 3mm white gold band, so as not to distract or detract from her honking rock of an engagement ring. I’m interested in darker, duller metals (you know, to match my personality). Tungsten looks really cool, and is very durable. Plus, if you run a current through me, it will glow like the One Ring in Tolkien’s trilogy, being made from the same stuff as light bulb filaments.
Sorry about the lack of updates here… I’ll try to do better.
