A Series of Tubes in “Gears of War”

While flipping through the list of “achievements” that can be earned in the game Gears of War for Xbox 360, I noticed one that stuck out.

A Series of Tubes -- Gears of War

This is, of course, a reference to “Bridge to Nowhere” Senator Ted Stevens’ famous quote in which he called an e-mail “an Internet” and called the Internet “a series of tubes.”

Right now I’m posting this on an 802.11g tube, or as Senator Stevens calls it, a “new-fangled invisible tube.”

The interweb is amazing. I’m glad Al Gore invented it. I’m super serial.

Funny, but I didn’t get an Internet, er, sorry, an internet (Senator’s choice of caps, not mine) from you, and my tubes — internal and those connected to the modem — haven’t had any recent disruptions.

Perhaps I simply need to wait the requisite five days, especially if your server’s in the DC area. Nothing down there is safe from getting clogged. Especially tubes. Need proof? Listen to any session of Congress.

Gears is pretty good about the references in the achievements. I love how the achievement for killing a Beserker on hardcore difficulty is called “My Love For You is Like a Truck.”

Very amusing, I wonder if the programmers had a giggle while they were building this section of the game
