A Small Orange, A Big Recommendation

MarkJaquith.com, my digital “portal” is hosted with A Small Orange [affiliate link]. A few months back I upgraded my account size. The upgrade must have removed my shell access, because when I tried to SSH in this morning, it said it needed to be activated with a support ticket.

I sent an e-mail to ASO’s technical support staff.

Shell access was enabled 60 seconds later. Not even joking. I sent the e-mail at 11:11am and at 11:12am I got the e-mail back saying it had been enabled.

And there you have why Small Orange continues to be the only host that I recommend for people small-to-medium shared hosting needs.

I must agree. I’ve never had any problems with my asmallorange account. The price on the small account is fine for people hosting some blogs. You might find something cheaper but I’ve never had any problems with asmallorange (not like some other hosts).

I’m seeing increasing poor performance across 3 of their servers (I resell), sending an email direct to their support does not get help or even a helpful bounce.
My site also got suspended last night because of a plugin. They knew what it was, they could have deactivated and told me but instead they killed the domain. That’s what I would expect the bad hosts like Site5 to do. ASO used to kill plugins - it would be posted to the forums when they had removed a bad script. But now they have moved up a level and don’t seem to be bothered.
That together with the increasing downtime tells me they just lost the touch. I’m certainly after a new host - the downtime alone was bad:
    - in my short time with Site5 I would have sites down and all Site5’s monitoring would show it was all wonderful. ASO’s server status also does the same.

So yeah, I’m looking for a new deal elsewhere.

Oh yes, you are right…I am very happy with the ASO…they are simply great..their prices are also cheaper than others…

    Great Going ASO…

Hi I am a current customer with ASO. I have been with them for 2 years now coming to 3 years. When i first started with them i will admit they have been awesome no doubt.

But.. their services have degraded drastically. They have new technicians who really dont know what their talking about, i think they maybe be high school work temps dont know. What really is costing me is their downtime. They are going down everyday atleast once or twice. If i am ever lucky then my websites will survive for more than one day. Really i am already looking to move hosts. ASO have a very bad service and their bad service isnt just a small spike its been like this for 6 months now. I was hoping things will improve but they have not.

If you are planning to run a forum or something which requires a database backend i would highly not recommend them. But if you are wanting to host a small blog website for yourself then this is the place for you. I would not recommend ASO for any businesses or large forum communities.

    Thanks
