Recent CBS/NYT Poll

A new CBS/New York Times poll has a few interesting nuggets I’d like to mention.

Does Oprah Winfrey’s involvement in Barack Obama’s Presidential campaign make you more likely to support Barack Obama, less likely, or doesn’t it make a difference to you?

One percent of likely Democratic primary voters said “more likely.” Fourteen percent said “less likely.” Run away Obama. Run away.

Is it possible you would ever vote for a candidate for the 2008 Republican nomination who does not share your views on social issues like abortion or same-sex marriage, or are these social candidate who disagrees with you?

42 percent of likely Republican primary voters would, 53 percent wouldn’t. This appears to hurt Rudy’s upper limit… but wait!

Do you think Rudy Giuliani shares the same values as most Republicans, or doesn’t he share the same values?

52 percent think he does. 36 percent does not. Seems that either the Republican tend is getting bigger on issues like gay marriage and abortion, or a lot of people are ignorant of Rudy’s positions on these issues.

What I found really fascinating is the difference between what Republican voters want, and what they think is going to happen. As for who they wanted in the primary, 22 percent wanted Giuliani, 21 percent wanted Huckabee, and 16 percent wanted Romney. But for who they thought would end up winning the nomination, 43 percent thought Giuliani, 18 percent thought Romney, and 13 percent thought Huckabee. Even though Giuliani has the most delicate of leads, people are regarding his nomination as inevitable! And even though Huckabee’s numbers are incredible competetive, he seems to be regarded as a severe underdog.

With regards to our withdrawal from Iraq, 75 percent think we should withdraw within two years (2% now, 49% less than a year, 24% 1-2 years). Only six percent say we should be there for more than five years. And only eight percent think we should be there as long as it takes. Unfortunately that wasn’t broken down between Republicans and Democrats.
