Thanks for the post. I bought the D700 about six months ago. I am still learning all the features. Right now I am trying to learn how to shoot sports shots.

T-Ball is starting soon and I want to be able to take great fast shots. Any recommendation on the Apeture and ISO settings?

I also use the Op Tech Pro Loop strap on both my D3 and D700 without any fitment problems whatsoever. Great information provided in this post by Mark. Now trying to find a bag big enough to comfortably carry both bodies with lenses attached. I use the Lowe Pro slingshot 300aw. I have tried the Tamrac Velocity 10 but the fit is to tight for both bodies. Any suggestions?

Been waiting for my D700 from the courier since 8am :) Found this post, thank you, very concise and useful. Wish someone would do one for the SB900! Can't wait to see how ugly I can make my kids with a 14-22mm closeup!

A very helpful set of tips, particularly for customizing the various menus. This one article has been of more use to me than a couple of large, pricey D700 guides which turned out to be little more than glossy rehashes of the Nikon users manual

thanks

The OpTech Pro Loop Strap is useless with a D700 unless you use split rings. The loops won't fit through the camera lugs. If you're going to use split rings, what's the point in using the Pro Loop Strap? OpTech makes the same strap with split rings. OpTech straps aren't all they're cracked up to be anyway. More hype than substance. I've tried them, including the Pro Loop Strap, and they're all on the closet shelf. I don't use them. I use a Promaster Contour strap that is perfect. Very well made and serviceable, strong, comfortable, and absolutely non-slip. Plus it has the look of a pro strap, elegant and low-key. My D700 looks great on it. Promaster also makes a great bag strap.

Hi and thanks for the manual! I just picked up the D700 a week ago love it. I also picked up the Batt grip in attempts of getting 8fps instead of 5fps but when I put on the batt grip i'm still getting 5fps is there a setting inside the menu that I forgot to turn on??

FYI....I'm in shutter priority 1/1000 with a fully charged enl batteries.

Tom,

f/1.4 has such a paper-thin DOF that you can sometimes just get the tip of a person's nose in sharp focus, but their eyes will be out of focus. Or if they're not facing you straight on, one eye will be in focus but not the other. I find I like my results better at 2.8. Of course in bad light, beggars can't be choosers, so I'll take f/1.4 over a shutter speed under 1/60.

Hi. Thanks for the tips! I just bought my d700 and am overwhelmed with the features! But I am not sure why you said portraits look bad at f1.4. This is my primary setting for up-close people pictures!
