There can be no "step in the right direction" because Facebook's "terms" aren't worth the virtual page they glow on. What does matter and supersedes everything else is their domain: facebook.com belongs entirely to Facebook, not to you or your friends or anyone else. Why is that? Because FB owns facebook.com, you do not, and they patently control everything at their own domain. Domain = Control = Ownership. It is not "your" profile on Facebook, it is Facebook's profile on you. FB encourages wishful thinking to the contrary with their fraudulent verbiage, Facebook parades it's familiar images of your "Friends" like endorsements or social bait. but at the end of the day inasmuch as you establish yourself on FB's website, FB owns and controls you. I choose not to subject myself to FB anymore than I would choose to holiday with wax dummies of my friends in North Korea. I own my own domain and properly establish my identity there where I can remain dignified and self-possessed, in control and responsible. I am quite capable of keeping my own database of contacts. Imagine if FB had owned Schindler's list?

Right. It's just that the communication you talk of is content. Even more private than what you would do on say your public profile.

Cutting back on facebook is a great idea either way. It has increased internet tunnel vision by a hundred. :(

Are you on Facebook and what would you say to someone when they are thinking of quiting (due to such exact privacy reasons..)?

I am. But I don't really put much "content" up there. It's more of a communications tool for me. I won't be putting my photos up there, for instance, until their terms become more amicable.

To you, I'd say give them a shot to make good on this new statement of principles.

I love hearing dirty secrets about facebook. I have been thinking of disabling my account. If it just wasn't such a great connectivity tool, i would quit in a heart beat.
