Where I stand (2009)
I took the OK Cupid politics test in 2005 and again in 2006. It’s been a while, so I took it again!
Here is my result for 2009:

And here are my 2005 and 2006 results for comparison:

My overall trend is to move deeper into the libertarian zone, and closer to anarchy, but my movement has slowed down. You won’t find me appreciably go into the anarchist area, because I do believe that a state is a necessary evil (to be kept small and contained—only as big as is needed to protect human rights and protect against foreign invasions).
I like this test because it isn’t just a two dimensional “Socialist/Democrat/Moderate/Republican/Conservative” test. It tracks economic permissiveness (vertical axis) and social permissiveness (horizontal axis).
I’m pretty sure that if you answer (like I did) that two consenting adults should be allowed to agree to a duel to the death you’re automatically thrown into the upper-right quadrant.
Let me know your results if you take the test! It only takes a few minutes.
Thanks for reminding me about this test! When I first took it in 2005, I remember being being a Centrist, but closer to the Republican side. Almost four years later, I’m right in the middle of the Democrat side, mostly associated with Hilary Clinton. I will lay the blame for this radical change on the countless hours that I invested since GW’s second term, researching and forming my own political opinions, rather than letting others steer my views.
Turns out I am little bit of a centrist… This isn’t that surprising I suppose, I wish that I was in the wings a little more, perhaps solely for the conversation…
I think this test is a little simplistic. I’ve been moving in a similar direction (Libertarian) for years, yet it still bumped me almost into the socialist zone… And yes, I DO believe two people, by mutual agreement, should be allowed to duel to the death; but only at dawn, with swords or pistols.
Regarding the aspect of dueling to the death, I agree as well, but fish should also qualify as an approved weapon.
Howdy neighbor, I’m just southeast of you. Wanna start a gulch with me?
Here’s where I ended up a little surprised about it.
That’s not far from where I would have pegged you, Matt. Maybe a little bit more towards the top, but still in the centrist sphere.
I like this way of representing political views…I’m sick of the narrow choice between two parties
Mark,
I just found your website and blog (via your subscribe-to-comments plug-in) and already like it — and you!
Libertarian, no more government than necessary, and helpful information — a great combo.
And “thanks” for the plug-in.
Best regards,
Tom
That was a shock. It turns out I’m a libertarian. By the way, I love that they put a picture of Darth Vader under totalitarian.
Thanks for the recommendation, Mark. I was not surprised to find that I am an economic conservative and a social moderate – aka Capitalist.

My favorite question? “I am troubled by the eroding distinction between entertainment and marketing.”
For me the answer is: I EMBRACE eroding distinction between entertainment and marketing.
The invisible hand will always prevail.
I have a small question on the chart itself. Why is it that on this chart “Fascist” is prominently displayed outside “Totalitarian” (totally attached to “Republican”), yet “Communist” is completely missing from the picture? Is this a coincidence? I think, not. I have researched the subject and there are many other versions of political spectrum representation, and not one seem to be so misleading.
Finally had time to take the test. Thanks for the reminder. Results:
- Social Moderate (43% permissive)
- Economic Conservative (63% permissive)
- best described as a Centrist
- You exhibit a very well-developed sense of Right and Wrong and believe in economic fairness.
- my circle was right smack center on the face of John McCain hahaha
This was fun. Cheers
