I have a sneaking suspicion that I’m going to become a “watch guy.”
I recently gave in to a years-long desire for a Tag Heuer Carrera automatic chronograph. Apparently watches are like tattoos: it’s hard to stop at one.
Here are some of the timepieces that I’d love to (someday, Sarah, someday) have on my wrist. First up, the BR 01-93 GMT by Bell & Ross.
This smart-looking and giant watch has a date window and a second timezone display (indicated by the orange arrow). Looks to be around $3,500.
My next lust object is alas only a prototype. Tag Heuer’s Monaco Twenty Four concept watch. The movement is sandwiched between its sapphire face and case back, and suspended by four shock-absorbers. It looks amazing. In all likelihood, won’t ever be offered for sale.
Finally, we have the Rolex Day-date II in platinum with black concentric dial. Elegant, and definitely a dress-up watch. Around $40,000. Someday, man.

Unlike a tattoo will counterfeit do?
“automatic” on the CARRERA faceplate is a bit sad I think — historic? Kinetic much?

Nah, some of the allure is the joy of earning the money for the real thing!
That’s what automatic means. Automatic kinetic self-winding.

Guess automatic is just a too much abused term in my life 😉
Battery powered watches would seem to be automatic as well, if you are unfamiliar with the chronograph — that’s a watch, right? but you can charge more if you call it that — jargon.
My distrust of “automatic” comes from people calling a car with an automatic transmission an “automatic car”. It’s such a tease — I want a truly automatic car.
Wake away very slowly and I won’t bite.

You should check out the Breitling watches. I want this one. It’s the only automatic chronograph to be fully operational at 1000m (Breitling has the record on this one). They will engrave the front with whatever you want, these are popular Air Force watches, they’ll do the wings and whatever plane you want on the face. They all run about 3.5 grand or so though.

Breitling watches are the aviation watch. I’m not surprised you’re drawn to them!
I’m particularly taken with their Cosmonaute model with its 24-hour dial! Useful for my next shuttle mission where my usual day-night indicators aren’t reliable.
