The “OC” Disorder

Obamacare in effect, can buy insurance after getting sick, drop your insurance, insurance gets more expensive. Repeat.

Now that Obama’s health care insurance bill has passed, note that it will be advantageous to drop your insurance. The penalty is less expensive than insurance, for the vast majority of people. And since the bill is going to increase the cost of health insurance, it’s probably going to be less expensive for everyone to just pay the penalty. That’s assuming that the IRS is even able to collect the penalty. You can then just get insurance once you get sick or get badly injured, because insurers won’t be able to turn you down for a preexisting condition (imagine if car insurance worked this way!)

A smaller pool of insured people (with more of them being in need of care) means that insurance rates will go up, again. That’ll cause more people to drop their insurance.

Let this happen enough, and the only people with health insurance are going to be the sick. Insurance companies will go broke long before this.

“Oh no! Why didn’t they think of this?”

Oh, right. They probably did.
