Subscribe to Comments 2.1
Subscribe to Comments 2.1 is a plugin that allows commenters on your blog to check a box before commenting and get e-mail notification of further comments. It is one of the most popular WordPress plugins out there for the simple reason that it helps foster a community around your blog by encouraging commenters to come back and stay engaged in the dialog.

- Users cannot enter a random e-mail into the subscription manager and modify someone else’s subscriptions
- In order to modify subscriptions, users need to use a special link, given in notification e-mails, and printed in the comments form as long as they have their comment cookie
- Recognition of subscription status
- Unsubscribed users see the “subscribe to comments” checkbox, but subscribed users see a “Manage your subscriptions” link
- The author of the post is recognized by either login or comment cookie and is assumed to be subscribed to the entry (as they will receive notifications through WordPress)

- Ability to let users change notification e-mail address
- In the subscription manager, users can request that their notification address be changed for all their subscriptions
- Special link is sent to the old address for verification
- Once clicked, their e-mail address will be changed instantly for all their comments

- No modification of comments form needed for WP 1.5+ (supported themes)
- For users who want custom placement of the checkbox/link to subscription manager, this can be done with one simple function call, placed anywhere in the comment form

Version 2.1 Update
Version 2.1 of Subscribe to Comments has a feature that people have been begging me to implement for many months: you can view the list of people who are subscribed to posts on your blog, and you can also see a list of the most “subscribed” posts. Also in this version is a new one-file install. You just put subscribe-to-comments.php in your /plugins/ directory, activate, and you’re done. This version will work on WordPress versions from 2.0.6 through 2.3.1 (highest tested).

- 2.1.2 Fixed a few bugs that’d send bad notifications (thanks Donncha!), cleaned up some code and moved to using proper WP escaping functions

Great plugin, but I get the following error on posts that have comments enabled. Instead of a hyperlink to the Subscription Manager under the comment, I get the URL displayed as normal test such as http://.
When going to this link by manually copy/pasting the URL, I get the following error:

This has to be one of the most useful plugins out there, but since i did a new install of WP 2.2 nothing is showing up in the comments form where it should be, but when i upgraded to 2.2 from 2.1 it carried on working?
is this compatible with 2.2, or is there something else going on?

Martin: It is not compatible with WP 2.2, because WP 2.2 uses a different mailing function. At least on my blog it doesn’t work when upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2.
The plugin displays in the right place and all, but there’s no mail notification on new comments.
I hope the author of this great plugin is debugging it.

Help others - need some help myself…
I too wondered why the checkbox showed up, but there was no text. That is set in the WP Options > Subscribe to Comments page. I’ve got “Get notification of comments via e-mail.” under NOT SUBSCRIBED and “You get e-mail notification of these comments. Manage your e-mail notifications” under SUBSCRIBED.
Which leads me to problems I’m having… I too am getting the “You may not access this page without a valid key.” error when clicking on “Manage your e-mail notifications”. It appears that in the link URL (which includes the e-mail address) the “@” sign is sometimes getting substituted for “%2540″ instead of “%40″, and the error comes up. Can anybody assist with getting the extra “25″ removed from the link URL - or having it just use “@”.
BTW, I am using WP 2.2 (upgraded from 2.1.3) and am not having any issues with e-mail notifications going out.

UPDATE:
I can’t even manage my subscription here. When I click on “Manage your subscriptions” the part of the link that has my email address shows “%40″ in the browser’s status bar - but gets converted to “%2540″ when the going to the page. Manually deleting the extra “25″ from the URL lets me manage my subscription. This is occurring with both IE7 and Firefox 2.0.0.4 on 2 different computers (XP & Vista). Any thoughts???

Add me to the list of folks who need a different page thrown into my browser when either subscribing without commenting or trying to modify subscriptions. It’s certainly those two extra characters (50) that get dumped into the address bar.
Hopefully there will be a fix released soon for wp2.2. Other than this problem, I really enjoy this plugin.

I installed the modified subscribe-to-comments 2.1b, and subscription management in now working! When clicking on the link to modify subscriptions, the URL is no longer getting modified.
I tested changing a subscribed e-mail address and e-mail notifications, and everything appears to be working — no bugs with the bugfix
Beim Matthias habe ich gerade gelesen, dass das Kommentar zu Kommentarbenachrichtigung Subscribe to Comments einen Fehler aufweist, der dazu führt, dass der Link zum Verwalten der Abonnements für nicht angemeldete Nutzer nicht mehr funktioniert. Ich habe das Plugin mal auf die Schnelle mal so modifiziert, dass eure Leser die abonnierten Kommentare wieder
