Subscribe to Comments 2.1
Subscribe to Comments 2.1 is a plugin that allows commenters on your blog to check a box before commenting and get e-mail notification of further comments. It is one of the most popular WordPress plugins out there for the simple reason that it helps foster a community around your blog by encouraging commenters to come back and stay engaged in the dialog.
Features
- Rudimentary security
- Users cannot enter a random e-mail into the subscription manager and modify someone else’s subscriptions
- In order to modify subscriptions, users need to use a special link, given in notification e-mails, and printed in the comments form as long as they have their comment cookie
- Recognition of subscription status
- Unsubscribed users see the “subscribe to comments” checkbox, but subscribed users see a “Manage your subscriptions” link
- The author of the post is recognized by either login or comment cookie and is assumed to be subscribed to the entry (as they will receive notifications through WordPress)
- Themeable subscription manager
- Uses visual style of WordPress interface
- Can be optionally accessed via “Manage” menu in WordPress
- E-mail verification of block requests
- Javascript “invert selection” link to check/uncheck subscriptions for mass deletion
- “Return to the page you were viewing” link that persists at the top of the page, so that users can easily return to the post they were reading once they are done modifying subscriptions
- Ability to let users change notification e-mail address
- In the subscription manager, users can request that their notification address be changed for all their subscriptions
- Special link is sent to the old address for verification
- Once clicked, their e-mail address will be changed instantly for all their comments
- Easy integration into comments form
- No modification of comments form needed for WP 1.5+ (supported themes)
- For users who want custom placement of the checkbox/link to subscription manager, this can be done with one simple function call, placed anywhere in the comment form
- Subscription without leaving a comment
- By popular demand, you can now offer visitors the option of subscribing to comments on an entry without having to leave a comment themselves
- If the reader later decides to join the conversation, their subscription continues without them having to explicitly set it
- Customization
- You can make the Subscription Manager that your users see use your theme’s header, footer and sidebar, using CSS to style it to fit your site
- Internationalization
- I’ve written Subscribe to Comments 2.1 with i18n in mind, making full use of
__()and_e()functions. The domain is “subscribe-to-comments”.

Version 2.1 Update
Version 2.1 of Subscribe to Comments has a feature that people have been begging me to implement for many months: you can view the list of people who are subscribed to posts on your blog, and you can also see a list of the most “subscribed” posts. Also in this version is a new one-file install. You just put subscribe-to-comments.php in your /plugins/ directory, activate, and you’re done. This version will work on WordPress versions from 2.0.6 through 2.3.1 (highest tested).
Versions
- 2.1.2 Fixed a few bugs that’d send bad notifications (thanks Donncha!), cleaned up some code and moved to using proper WP escaping functions
- 2.1.1 WordPress 2.2 compatibility! Also note that support for
attribute_escape()is needed, so if you get errors about that, upgrade to the latest version in your branch - 2.1 big update, fixing a few potential XSS holes, and misc error messages… see above for details
- 2.0.8 XSS security fixes, hopefully fixed “+” symbols in e-mail for good
- 2.0.7 additional “funky e-mail” fixes
- 2.0.6 support for e-mail addresses with “+” symbols, option to disable CSS “clearing”
- 2.0.4 potential security bugs, better WP 2.0 capabilities compat

I think it has to do with the version of WordPress that you have which is why this plugin doesn’t really work.
Angela,
Thanks for your feedback. Actually, I have the latest version of WordPress (which as of today is 2.2) — so are you saying that the plug-in might be outdated?
At any rate, I finally got it working. In my specific case (and I am NOT saying that this approach will work for everyone else who has a similar problem), it was a matter of testing different style attributes for the checkbox. Eventually, I set the “margin” and “padding” to 0, made sure that the “position” was relative, that there was no specific “width” and that the “display” was set to inline.
And all of a sudden, the text started showing up where it was supposed to be in the first place.
For what it’s worth!
WebGyver, it’s one thing to get the checkbox and text to display correctly but have you actually tested the functionality of the plugin to see if a comment subscriber actually receives new comment updates via email? For WordPress ver 2.2 it doesn’t seem to work.
Hopefully somebody is working on a fix as this is a great plugin and I can’t wait to start using it again.
Regards, Jared
OUCH!
So if WordPress is up to date, the plug-in might not actually work? Good gravy, we can’t have that.
HEY! Who’s in charge here?
(Thanks for pointing that out to me.)
Vielen Dank für dieses schöne Plugin!
Hilft dem Besucher wirklich weiter wobei es unwissenden auch zur Last werden kann!
will this work on wordpress 2.2? has anyon egotten an error using this with 2.2?
I just installed the 2.2.1 version, but it still doesn’t show me the checkbox. It does show me the text I inserted, but no checkbox.
What am I doing wrong, I’ve put bothe codes in the comments.php by using the admin interface -> themes -> theme editor -> edit comments.php
As I stated in my comment on May 31, the plugin is working on my website using WP 2.2
A bugfix posted a few days later fixed the subscription management link issue.
Thank you very much!
Version 2.1.1 of the plugin was released on June 20. No notice of the update on this website as I write this, I discovered it on the WordPress site http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/subscribe-to-comments/
However, when you download the plugin from this site - you get the latest version (2.1.1).
I’m not sure what is changed with the plugin, but it is working fine on my website with WordPress version 2.2.1 installed.
I get the following error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function attribute_escape() in /myblog/wp-content/plugins/subscribe-to-comments.php on line 762
Any idea?
I was using a previous version of subscribe to comments. Just deactivated the old one, deleted it, inserted the new .php file a activated the plugin.. But i get this error in the comment form.
Perfect! Just what I was looking for.
It is working fine
I found what I was looking for long time.

I uploaded Subscribe to Comments 2.1 and I get the following error on the comment page (below the Submit button):
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: attribute_escape() in /mnt/w0402/d17/s13/b02a6fe5/www/lewisempire.com/wp-content/plugins/subscribe-to-comments.php on line 762
Does anyone know a work around?
I uploaded Subscribe to Comments 1.5 as well but it made the user type in their email address again (rather than a check box)
Thanks!
When a commenter is on the site and clicks the manage subscriptions link, it says they cannot access the page without a valid key. Any idea why this happens?
Thank you
Please, explain unreasonable: what is TrackBack and Pingback?
Has their my site Paint Your Life?
When users check the “notify me via email” box, followed by trying to “unsubscribe by clicking here”, the above message appears in their browser. I’ve tried it, and get the same message.
How do I solve this?
I have the same problem as others have reported with WP 2.2.1. It’s impossible to get the text to show up next to the checkbox.
Great plugin when I’ve had it running, looking forward to an update.
Doesn’t work: Call to undefined function: attribute_escape()
For me too Doesn’t work

The form with their lines, texts and checkbox doesn’t appear for any place in my posts nor any page!, please any help will be very grateful for me! in advance thanks for any help!
Not sure wot to do
doesnot work..
An advice to everybody. At this time this plugin doesn´t work on versions later than 2.1, thus Wordpress latest version 2.2 and 2.2.1 are incompatible with subscribe-to-comments plugin. If anyone has a clue how to fix it, please let us know.
It worked for me on WP 2.1, 2.2 and now 2.2.1. It must be conflicting with some people’s theme’s or other plug-ins.
Ok. Did you tested if the emails actually was sent after submitting a new commet ? Some people has claimed that the plugin shows the check box on blog´s theme but after a new commet has been sent the email notification did not work.
Great plugin. Have used it for a long time on both of my blogs. Recently both were upgraded (one to 2.2.1 and one to just 2.2 — problem with provider). Both installation seem to still be working. Keep in mind this plugin was installed and functional prior to the WP upgrade. I have, however, created a blog for a friend with WP 2.2.1. Installed this plugin and get a similar problem to what others are seeing. I get the checkbox but nothing else. If anyone figures out the problem, please post it here so everyone can get the update because we all probably subscribed to this comment thread.
It’s working here on a fresh install of 2.2.
All Greetings.
You cannot find the information necessary you?
Then to you here…

See you soon!
I couldn’t fixed it
I am using WP version 2.0.3 and have installed your plugin, however I leave a comment I am getting this error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: attribute_escape() in /usr/local/psa/home/vhosts/read-how.com/httpdocs/myblog/wp-content/plugins/subscribe-to-comments.php on line 762
What should I do to fix it? Thanks.
I too will love it if the author creates an update for 2.2. I have only the checkbox with no text, as described above, and even when I check it from another browser, I don’t get an email back.
I would love an update, as this is a great plugin. I discovered it through another blogger who’s comments I subscribed to in a thread.
Any chance Tempus Fugit will create an update soon? Thanks so much.

Hmmm, great idea. I think i will start to do this.
I just upgraded to the latest 2.1.1 version of your plugin and still only see just a check box
great plugin. does it works with wordpress versions 2.2/2.2.1
Hi
I have similar problem with some wordpress 2.2.1.
Both the check and text aren’t displayed at all.
Here’s the site: http://www.pagethinker.com
Would appreciate your help. Thanks.
Thanks for this cool plugin. My first time with WP, so still very much a Noob
The issue with options not showing up (like the next next to the check box) is due to a bug in WP 2.2.x … I’ll be releasing a new version of the plugin to work around it, and I’ll be making sure WP is updated as well.
Great news! Hope all issues related by users get resolved. Thank You Mark.
Very happy to hear, thanks a lot Mark!
