Subscribe to Comments 2.1
Subscribe to Comments 2.1 is a plugin that allows commenters on your blog to check a box before commenting and get e-mail notification of further comments. It is one of the most popular WordPress plugins out there for the simple reason that it helps foster a community around your blog by encouraging commenters to come back and stay engaged in the dialog.

- Users cannot enter a random e-mail into the subscription manager and modify someone else’s subscriptions
- In order to modify subscriptions, users need to use a special link, given in notification e-mails, and printed in the comments form as long as they have their comment cookie
- Recognition of subscription status
- Unsubscribed users see the “subscribe to comments” checkbox, but subscribed users see a “Manage your subscriptions” link
- The author of the post is recognized by either login or comment cookie and is assumed to be subscribed to the entry (as they will receive notifications through WordPress)

- Can be optionally accessed via “Manage” menu in WordPress
- E-mail verification of block requests
- Javascript “invert selection” link to check/uncheck subscriptions for mass deletion
- “Return to the page you were viewing” link that persists at the top of the page, so that users can easily return to the post they were reading once they are done modifying subscriptions
- Ability to let users change notification e-mail address
- In the subscription manager, users can request that their notification address be changed for all their subscriptions
- Special link is sent to the old address for verification
- Once clicked, their e-mail address will be changed instantly for all their comments
- Easy integration into comments form
- No modification of comments form needed for WP 1.5+ (supported themes)
- For users who want custom placement of the checkbox/link to subscription manager, this can be done with one simple function call, placed anywhere in the comment form
- Subscription without leaving a comment
- By popular demand, you can now offer visitors the option of subscribing to comments on an entry without having to leave a comment themselves
- If the reader later decides to join the conversation, their subscription continues without them having to explicitly set it

- You can make the Subscription Manager that your users see use your theme’s header, footer and sidebar, using CSS to style it to fit your site

Version 2.1 Update
Version 2.1 of Subscribe to Comments has a feature that people have been begging me to implement for many months: you can view the list of people who are subscribed to posts on your blog, and you can also see a list of the most “subscribed” posts. Also in this version is a new one-file install. You just put subscribe-to-comments.php in your /plugins/ directory, activate, and you’re done. This version will work on WordPress versions from 2.0.6 through 2.3.1 (highest tested).

- 2.1.2 Fixed a few bugs that’d send bad notifications (thanks Donncha!), cleaned up some code and moved to using proper WP escaping functions
- 2.1.1 WordPress 2.2 compatibility! Also note that support for
attribute_escape()is needed, so if you get errors about that, upgrade to the latest version in your branch - 2.1 big update, fixing a few potential XSS holes, and misc error messages… see above for details

Looking at all these comments, looks like this plugin works wonders! I would like to add it to my site, but sadly after I finished uploading to my plugins files, I log into my account and it’s not there! Please help me.
I have a slight validation problem with your extension and the Wordpress search. Both seem to be using id=”s” which gives a validation error at the W3 Validator.
Any idea how I can change the id? I’m not that of a coder
So, does this plugin compatible to wordpress 2.6 already?
Great plugin! It would be nice to be able to filter comment subscriptions by entering a keyword (such as your name) to make sure you’re only getting relevant replies. Some sites have too many comments coming in to be worth subscribing to!
I’m trying to get the checkbox to be checked by default. I’ve tried a few things but it’s all shots in the dark since I have no knowledge of code. Anyone have any ideas? Many thanks! and the plugin is Great! Much love

I’ve recently come across a new problem and was wondering if you could help - one of my subscribers (or bot) has been able to subscribe without leaving an email address. I can see it in the subscription manager, but not delete it. When I select and click “remove selected subscriptions” there is no change.
I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction to correct and get rid of this entry?

Ok, it seems that it is subscribing to link backs I make to posts within the site. I’m not sure why this is happening though. I’m running WP 2.6.2.

Hello: I think the plugin is great thanks.
Someone appears to have entered an incorrect email address when subscribing. Now every time someone adds a new comment to an article they’ve subscribed to I am getting failure notices from my mail system.
Is there any way I can stop this? I have the incorrect email address in the messages but how can I either amend the address or delete it?

Hi,
I translated this amazing plug-in to portuguese but I think I’m doing something wrong. All the backend (management, options, setup, etc.) of it is now translated but the checkbox “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail” is still in English.

You can post a test comment there and then, after I approve it, you will see that “Subscription Manager” section is now in portuguese.

I want to use it - but I have a problem. I secured the /wp-admin/ with a htaccess pass. So I need to enter a pass before I get to the admin-login.
Fine, BUT if I use the Plugin given by you, I need to enter the pass too, but my users of course do not know the pass. How can I get rid of this problem? Any help appreciated.
I have to enter the pass (htaccess) if I want to “manage my subscriptions” (link).
I tried to add “user:pass@xxx in the Link here:

Good plugin but it doesn’t work on my 2.6.2 install of wordpress.
Correction, the plugin seems to work, but there is a conflict with my archives page.
As soon as I enable this plugin my archives page won’t load. When I disable the plugin the archive page loads normally.
Any suggestions on that one?

the option to have to subscribe to comments checkbox checked on default is missing in the plugin. Is it possible to do something in the code to change the status of the checkbox to “checked”?

Yeah , if the checkbox was checked it would be much easier to keep few more people in , but it seems like you are forcing them to receive the notification instead of them choosing it , but thats just my 2 cents ..

German Bloggers have a problem with your GREAT plugin because it doesn’t support double-opt-in.
The first one got a letter from a lawyer and has to pay “a fine”.
So now many blogs disable your plugin.
Is it possible to get an update with double-opt-in?

But there is a problem for german users. It doesn´t use the Double-Opt-In-Procedure. Without that the risk tot get a warning with costs is to high in germany.
It would be great, if you could enhance the plugin with the Double-Opt-In-Functionality.

the user still can manage their subscription when they click cancel when the it prompt for a password. This work on my site.
It just the page display will be kind of messy a bit
I still can’t use the plugin because of a conflict with my archive page. Is there something in my theme which might be causing this? Once the plugin is activates my archive page will only partially load . . .
