Subscribe to Comments is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of subsequent entries. The plugin includes a full-featured subscription manager that your commenters can use to unsubscribe to certain posts, block all notifications, or even change their notification e-mail address!

Installation
- Put subscribe-to-comments.php into [wordpress_dir]/wp-content/plugins/
- Go into the WordPress admin interface and activate the plugin
- Optional: if your WordPress theme doesn’t have the comment_form hook, or if you would like to manually determine where in your comments form the subscribe checkbox appears, enter this where you would like it:
<?php show_subscription_checkbox(); ?> - Optional: If you would like to enable users to subscribe to comments without having to first leave a comment, place this somewhere in your template, but make sure it is outside the comments form. A good place would be right after the ending

FAQ
Q. How can I tell if it’s working?
A.
- Log out of WordPress
- Leave a comment on an entry and check the comment subscription box, using an e-mail that is NOT the WP admin e-mail address or the e-mail address of the author of the post.
- Leave a second comment using a different e-mail address than the one you used in step 2 (it can be a bogus address).
- This should trigger a notification to the first address you used.
Q. I’d like the subscription checkbox to be checked by default. Can I do that?
A. Not anymore. But the checkbox status will be remembered on a per-user basis.
Q. My subscription checkbox shows up in a strange place. How do I fix it?
A. Try unchecking the CSS “clear” option. Beyond that, you’re on your own with CSS positioning.

The blog works fine, as do the comments and everything. It’s been upgraded a couple of times from WP version 1.5 to 2.0. I don’t get it. What should the permissions fot the database be if the blog is working fine already?

I just had to go into the mySQL database for my blog and delete over 4000 spam emails which were input through the “subscribe without leaving a comment” option. I looked all afternoon for where those emails were hidden in my database before I finally found them.
We really *really* need an option to edit (DELETE!) large groups of emails without needing to go to in our server’s PHP MyAdmin and doing it by brute force.
I would love to keep using the plug in, but I don’t ever again want to do what I had to do today. Without some sort of recourse against a future similar spam attack … I just can’t take the chance.

Hi there – thanks for the sweet plugin! We had to remove Subscribe-To-Comments for a while since bots were signing people up for emails and then trying to sneak a single spam comment through. Got some big huge ugly lists of “subscribers”.
The fix I implemented in this new version is in the add_subscriber function – I changed the SQL that selects the comment_post_ID to check for an approved comment:
$postid = $wpdb->get_var("SELECT comment_post_ID from $wpdb->comments WHERE comment_ID = '$cid' and comment_approved='1'");Seems to work well in testing, so I’m pushing it out. Just posting this for anyone else looking for info…

Hi, this plugin is exactly what I need but I need the “subscribe without commenting” and I am at a loss as to how to set it up. Would like it to appear between bottom of post and above regular comment form. Person I am doing it for would like subscribers to not have to comment to subscribe to comments. When I put all of function show_manual_subscription_form() in single.php tells me is already called by the subscribe-to-comments.php plugin file. I’m a WordPress newbie, I think I am missing something very obvious. Thanks, Tony

Hi, does v2.1 of this plugin work in WP2.1.1?
I can’t get it to work at all – no emails turn up – I have followed instructions explicitly.
Also, I note that the “clear:both” option in WPAdmin stays on no matter what I set in the options page, I click update, but when I go back to the page its selected again.

Personally, I am always careful to un-tick the little box so that I don’t get notification unless I want to follow the ongoing discussion. In fact, sometimes, I find it annoying too. Hehehe. However, this plugin – Subscribe to Comments is still a very good way for me to communicate with my blogs visitors. I have a way of them coming back to my site. Then, chances of them browsing around my blog increases if they have landed on it when the email notified them that I have replied.

hi, this is a nice plug-in, unfortunately a lot of spammers added random addresses to my db and i’d have to delete them one by one. so it would be nice to have an interface to delete several marked addresses at once, even better if there was an option to invert the selection.
