Subscribe to Comments is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of subsequent entries. The plugin includes a full-featured subscription manager that your commenters can use to unsubscribe to certain posts, block all notifications, or even change their notification e-mail address!

Installation
- Put subscribe-to-comments.php into [wordpress_dir]/wp-content/plugins/
- Go into the WordPress admin interface and activate the plugin
- Optional: if your WordPress theme doesn’t have the comment_form hook, or if you would like to manually determine where in your comments form the subscribe checkbox appears, enter this where you would like it:
<?php show_subscription_checkbox(); ?> - Optional: If you would like to enable users to subscribe to comments without having to first leave a comment, place this somewhere in your template, but make sure it is outside the comments form. A good place would be right after the ending

Q. How can I tell if it’s working?
A.
- Log out of WordPress
- Leave a comment on an entry and check the comment subscription box, using an e-mail that is NOT the WP admin e-mail address or the e-mail address of the author of the post.
- Leave a second comment using a different e-mail address than the one you used in step 2 (it can be a bogus address).
- This should trigger a notification to the first address you used.
Q. I’d like the subscription checkbox to be checked by default. Can I do that?
A. Not anymore. But the checkbox status will be remembered on a per-user basis.
Q. My subscription checkbox shows up in a strange place. How do I fix it?
A. Try unchecking the CSS “clear” option. Beyond that, you’re on your own with CSS positioning.

Last night I think this plugin brought down my whole site. I had been using it successfully for about a week but when I turned Wp-Cache back on due to a large Stumble traffic burst the site went down with an error saying “The mail cannot be sent” right after I approved some subscribed comments.
Do you have any idea why this would happen? Have you seen it before?

I changed the way your plugin loads the text_domain. Now all strings are translated even if a user copies your plugin in its own subdirectory together with the mo-file.
In line 807 change it to:

Even with the CSS clear (un)checked, the label text next to the subscribe button seems to be missing or white(?). The plugin itself seems to be working fine (I get notifications). Just that I can only see the checkbox and not the check box label. Any ideas? Theme conflict?

Translations / what to do with mo-file? / How does it work?
Great plug-in. But I need to translate it. I started translating the pot-File with the poEditor. I generated the mo-File. But what than? I transferred the file into the /plugins/subscribe-to-comments-directory and tried it with several different names, like subscribe-to-comments-de_DE.mo. But nothing happens, still all in English.
What I am doing wrong?

If found a bug in this plugin. It is related to the path of the translation files, the plugin searches for translation files only in the /plugins/ folder and not in the folder of the plugin even if the plugin itself is in a subfolder. So, you should put your translation files directly in /plugins/ folder in order to worke.

the German pot is corrupted, too. What I have done is, I read the file with the Web-Browser Amaya – it was the only one which showed the html-code correct. This is by the way the problem. The pot-file is html-code.
After the browser displays the content correctly, I copied just the text to a text-file and opened it with poEdit. Some changes have to be done here and there, but than it works.

I assume the mo-file is created successfully. Than name it subscribe-to-comments-pt_PT.mo and copy it together with subscribe-to-comments.php directly in the plugin-directory of WP, not in a sub-directory.
“pt-PT” probably must be changed to what you have inserted in the WP-Configuration-file.

It’s me again. I have a new (perhaps old) problem. I have tried to subscribe to comments on a post, and when I add comments after my subscription, I receive no email, never. So the plugin doesn’t work… I ignore if it’s due to the .pot (whitch works greatly now). Impossible to find where is the list of subscribers. Nothing in the options, nothing in the Comment Manager… ? I have the last versions of WP and the plugin. I just can’t get this to work.
A user can click the button to subscribe to a comment, but they do not receive an email saying that they’ve been subscribed nor do they go to any subscriptions options page. In the previous version, I believe this page appeared immediately after subscribing. Also, there used to be a button to click that said, “manage my subscriptions” but I have no idea what the link to that would be so that I can include it in the label.
I’m using the 2.1.1 plugin version on WP 2.2.1.
I don’t know much about sql, but i’ve had a thought that maybe if this plugin is creating tables in the WP database, would it somehow be conflicting with the previous version of this plugin that was running?
Also, when i did my test comment earlier on this site, i got a “fatal error”. bleh.
ok, i’ve just found that i do get the emails when someone comments after me, and in that email is a link for managing your subscriptions. BUT, in the previous version, wasn’t there a way to do this after leaving a comment? I thought there was a link on the site.
