Subscribe to Comments is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of subsequent entries. The plugin includes a full-featured subscription manager that your commenters can use to unsubscribe to certain posts, block all notifications, or even change their notification e-mail address!

Installation
- Put subscribe-to-comments.php into [wordpress_dir]/wp-content/plugins/
- Go into the WordPress admin interface and activate the plugin
- Optional: if your WordPress theme doesn’t have the comment_form hook, or if you would like to manually determine where in your comments form the subscribe checkbox appears, enter this where you would like it:
<?php show_subscription_checkbox(); ?> - Optional: If you would like to enable users to subscribe to comments without having to first leave a comment, place this somewhere in your template, but make sure it is outside the comments form. A good place would be right after the ending
</form>tag for the comments form:<?php show_manual_subscription_form(); ?>
FAQ
Q. How can I tell if it’s working?
A.
- Log out of WordPress
- Leave a comment on an entry and check the comment subscription box, using an e-mail that is NOT the WP admin e-mail address or the e-mail address of the author of the post.
- Leave a second comment using a different e-mail address than the one you used in step 2 (it can be a bogus address).
- This should trigger a notification to the first address you used.
Q. I’d like the subscription checkbox to be checked by default. Can I do that?
A. Not anymore. But the checkbox status will be remembered on a per-user basis.
Q. My subscription checkbox shows up in a strange place. How do I fix it?
A. Try unchecking the CSS “clear” option. Beyond that, you’re on your own with CSS positioning.

Hi Mark, Thank you for this great plugin, it is exactly what I am looking for. However, I haven’t tried it yet, since on WP plugins page (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/subscribe-to-comments/) it says that it is compatible only up to WP 2.3.1. I have WP 2.5.1. Would it work with it? If yes, I would definitely be happy to donate!!

Great plugin which I have used successfully with older versions of WP. I cannot get it to function with my current version 2.5.1, however. Any idea why that might be? The plugin is activated, the management of it in the dashboard is in place and active, but there is no display on the comment page itself. Any suggestions?

hi, great plug in. i’m having a little problem configuring the path to my theme though. Could you give me an example of what the paths should look like where the settings say “Path to header: ” etc. i’m not sure i’m putting it in right as i keep getting “You may not access this page without a valid key.” it works fine uncustomized but if i could customize it that way it would be even better, thanks.

I have wp v 2.5.1. No email is sent to the first commenter when an 2nd person makes a comment.

Hi,
I cann’t get the translation working. I use the latest WP and the latest Plugin, Plugin works fine, but the translation is not shown. Files are ok, don’t know what to do. Files lie in the same folder as subscribe-to-comment.php, are named correctly. Does anybody have an idea to fix this? Or at least how the manipulate the script? If I change the text ‘notify me …’ in the script directly, it also has no effect.

Anne, if you know how to query the database you can look for rows in the postmeta table with meta_key = ‘_sg_subscribe-to-comments’
Here is the SQL statement I used:
