I’m still nowhere near ready to drop Mac OS X and use Ubuntu GNU/Linux as my primary operating system, but it is quite handy for that 5-year-old 1.0 GHz Dell system (which previously would not boot at all, but seems to have healed itself). One of the little things that it actually does quite better than OS X out of the box is its date widget, in the upper-right corner. Even without doing anything, it conveys a lot of information. Date, time, and day of week… just about everything you could ask. But what’s even better is when you click it… it shows you a calendar view. So if you’re on the phone and someone says “how about September 5th?” you can, in two clicks, know that September 5th is a Tuesday.

Apple, are you listening? How about an iCal-integrated version of the same?
Sept 5 — Does Katie Couric have that calendar? hope so .. or maybe not
MenuCalendarClock for OS X give you roughly the same functionality plus it integrates with iCal.
Mark,
What is keeping you from moving to Ubuntu? Just curious.
I made the move about 4 months ago and haven’t looked back.
I use XP at work and keep it installed at home for games… but that’s it.
Anyway, like I said, I’m just curious.
Congrats on the engagement by the way. I haven’t commented in a while, not since the FairTax comment war, but have been reading. Keep up the good work here.
My regards,
Travis Benning
Sorry, forgot to add this:
That screen shot you have there is of the Evolution (outlook equiv) mail client. Unless I’m missing something.
Cheers,
Travis
It’s just not user-friendly enough for my everyday use. I like having all that GNU and Unix goodness for when I feel like getting my geek on (and OS X gives me that), but the rest of the time I want stuff to just work. Ubuntu has improved since I last tried to switch, but it’s not quite there for me.
No, that’s just the menu bar at the top of the screen after a default Ubuntu install.
Evolution ties into the clock so you have a to do list available through that or through Evolution. The default (gnome) install does this to the best of my knowledge.
This guide helps one make Ubuntu look like OSX: http://www.taimila.com/ubuntuosx.php
OSX has Vista beat I think. Anyway, you answered my question so thanks for that. Have a good day.
