Oracle’s CEO Larry Ellison gives a bad name to “big bad evil companies” everywhere with his indifference to the Chinese Government’s blatant and destructive censorship policy. When the Chinese government blocked access to Google News, Ellison said, “The Chinese government has the right to do it, it’s a sovereign country.” He continued on to say that Oracle “was just a technology provider.”
Where is the line on this? Do sovereign countries have the right to do anything? I think most people would agree that it would be morally wrong for a company to facilitate the death of innocent civilians, but what about the facilitation of the suppression of free speech? In the end, free speech could get you killed in China, but how much corporate responsibility does Oracle bear?
